In 1851 Yavapai Indians attacked the Oatman family just west of Gila Bend, Arizona. Fourteen-year-old Olive and her little sister Mary Ann were taken captive, traded to the Mohave, and rescued five years later. Olive became a national celebrity and went on the coast to coast-lecture-circuit. This is her story taken from her autobiography, lecture notes, and two excellent academic biographies.
